‘The Rite’ Movie Review

Written on February 9, 2011 – 8:25 am | by Mike Stack |

“The Rite” horror/thriller movie recently released into theaters by New Line Cinema. I checked it out,and felt it was pretty good. It showed a lot of extreme exorcism scenes Anthony Hopkins. The flick stars: Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donoghue, Alice Braga, Ciaran Hinds, and Rutger Hauer.

“The Rite” movie centered around characters Michael Kovak (O’Donoghue) and Father Lucas Trevant (Hopkins). Michael is a young American Priest who has issues with his own faith. He has a difficult time believing that the Devil exist as well as the so-called Demonic possessions. The movie, often times, showed flashbacks of Michael’s childhood, which is where he first developed his faith issues when his father passed away.

Michael ends up traveling to Italy to learn about exorcism from Father Lucas because his American teacher thought he needed to get some “hands on” experience with exorcism since he showed so much doubt. As soon as he arrives at Lucas’ house,he gets introduced to his first live exorcism with a girl who is pregnant, and goes in and out of possessions.

With very convincing evidence of possession,Michael still shows much doubt in the faith. The victim spat out nails, blood, her voice changed, she became an extreme contortionist, and all other kinds of weird stuff, but Michael still swore she just needed to see a psychiatrist because she’s troubled.

Later on,Michael starts dealing with crazy issues brought about by strange dreams he’s been having that involve his dead father. Father Lucas tries to help him with his issues. However, Michael’s faith gets awakened when the demon possesses someone he never thought it would, and if Michael doesn’t get some real faith fast, his life and the lives of others are in great danger.

Michael and his female friend were in the room during the possession, and things get extremely bad. Finally, with his back up against the wall,Michael is forced to face the issues with his faith, and issues with God so he can overcome what is getting ready to kill him. The conclusion was quite intense and really had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next.

The flick was extremely entertaining and interesting. However, there were some slow times during the film, and I found myself dosing off for a little while, but things did pick up in a major way. It delivered a lot of “can’t miss,” emotional moments. The exorcism scenes were amazingly disturbing and convincing. I gave the flick a strong B rating.
