The Modern Uses Of Soothing Music

Written on July 20, 2010 – 11:15 am | by Chase Crawford |

One of the many musical options in store shelves these days is soothing music. You’d probably find it side by side rap and rock albums. From the term itself, it is easy to see what its intended basic function is. The question though is whether or not it is effective at what it’s supposed to do.

You can easily see the effects of musical pieces intended to soothe if you look into the effects of songs and instrumental compositions on the human body. Studies reveal that what people listen to for prolonged periods of time can affect mood, mental states and emotions. This is evident in heart beat rates and brain waves. Hence, fast beats tend to promote energy and adrenaline while soothing music tends to support restful and relaxing inner states.

It is because the effects of musical sounds have been scientifically proven that various therapy institutions, spas and practitioners have made good use of them. Just go to any spa in town and you are more likely to hear slow beats piping through the sound system rather than fast ones. The same can be said for the background sounds in recovery rooms, clinic activity centers, treatment clinics and rehabilitation centers.

Therapy isn’t the only situation you can use slow compositions for. They can also be utilized to calm people in high stress level situations. A lot of relaxing soothing music pieces are now therefore also used in medical or dental clinics, labor rooms and business offices. Naturally, you would feel more inclined to work on a time sensitive task or to get on the dentist’s chair when your nerves aren’t all bunched up.

Slow sounds now also have commercial applications. Advertisers and business establishments are now better able to sell ideas and products because of the right accompanying sound. You would be far more likely to make a purchase if merchants tried to appeal to your senses through a combination of sound and visual presentation.

Of course, there is also some kind of personal appeal to relaxing soothing music. You might want to play this kind of sound in and around your personal space. You can fall asleep to it, dance or use it together with an equally relaxing manual activity such as painting or sculpting. This is a great way to keep your mind and body at ease after a stressful day or to condition yourself before you dive into challenging tasks.

There are different kinds and qualities to calming compositions. The usual standard is classical pieces. Clearly though, not all of the works of masters carry consistently slow beats. You would most likely be able to get better calming quality if you settle for pieces that are specifically made for mood setting. There are now a number of composers who specialize mainly in producing this kind of musical pieces.

Truly, soothing music has found many modern uses. Clearly though, you don’t need a serious reason to just sit back with your player and enjoy the sounds. You can be an avid fan of this musical style for no reason at all.
