Towards the beginning of the 1970′s buble gum rock was practically finished. Various kinds of new music had been beginning to blossom; fusion, funk, challenging rock, and obviously punk rock. Although rock and roll had usually represented rebellious human expertise, punk rock took that mildew and broke it more than its knee. Punk may quite well be characterized as being the “most deviant part with the human soul” expressed as songs.
Whilst revolt isn’t a brand new concept, punk was the first type of tunes to take raw, angry, atom bomb emotions and put it into audio. Inside the early and mid 1970′s, bands like Iggy Pop along with the Stooges, The new York Dolls, plus the Ramones set the anti- establishment mantra for a generation of teens. These punk rockers ended up famous for not giving a damn what magazines and advertising thought of them. As a matter of fact, they didn’t look for media interest, the advertising sought them. A big theme in punk songs is anarchy or rebel towards anything that seeks to clamp down and force people today to behave rather than thinking for yourself.
These things rebelled against were mostly class or caste, authority, religious hatred, snobbery overall and anything else that posed a large dogmatic threat on humanity. How do you beat these idiotic suggestions? By attractive to probably the most basic component of individual beings and their self pursuits. An angry tune stirs up people today and makes them believe, but it has to shock your conscience. Iggy Pop smeared peanut butter on himself at 1 live performance while he sang. Sid Vicious lower himself during 1 exhibit and bled all over.
The music is in your face, energetic, loud and undefined. Guitars squeal, drummers kick their drums over in fits of rage, and also the bass holds all of it in concert. From the late 70′s and early 1980′s, bands just like the Dead Kennedys, The Clash, Minor Risk, The Damned, and the Sex Pistols pushed the envelope that their predecessors licked and mailed without a stamp. Tune titles like “Too Drunk to Fuck”, “Bodies”, and ‘New Rose” dealt with all the rawest side of individual malfeasance. As a make any difference of truth, Jello Biafra, the former lead singer with the Dead Kennedy’s was arrested and album artwork was seized. He contended that his prosecutors have been trying to squelch free of charge speech and intimidate musicians.
In the finish, whilst some individuals don’t like punk rock, it’s the freest form of musical expression around the planet earth and we owe a few of our civil liberties to these bands for pushing political idiots again into their cellars. Luckily, we have punk today like Rancid, The Meat Puppets and Green Day to keep the spirit of punk alive and well. If you wish to stand up and salute a punk rocker, just extend your center finger at the subsequent punk concert you attend, you will be thanked to your freedom of expression.

I’ve recently come across Bandcamp.com and I’m impressed with the service it provides for artists/bands (and for music fans for that matter.)
It lets bands sell their music as downloads so that the bands themselves keep all of the profit from those sales. Screw the record labels. It’s the artists that should be making money [...]

This week The Hype Machine is unveiling the top 50 artists & albums of 2009 (ten are revealed each weekday.)
The lists were compiled based on how often the artists and albums were mentioned on the music blogs on this list (no, MusicByDay.com isn’t on the list but we’re not nearly as focused on new music [...]

Our illustrious Mr. Whitperson was feeling a bit under the weather today, but he had some time to put together a rocking podcast to pay homage to the 10 year anniversary of Phish’s Big Cypress NYE2000 celebration down in Florida, easily one of the most important concerts of the decade. Love it.

I’ve mentioned here a few times before how much I like AmazonMP3 (I think it’s way better than ITunes) for purchasing music downloads. The selection is outstanding and I like that the mp3 quality is better than it is on ITunes and that you don’t have to use ITunes as your player (I prefer Winamp) [...]

Well I’m going to give it a shot again this evening. All the standard disclaimers apply – I’m going to get songs wrong (or more likely, not be able to identify them) particularly during the 2nd set. Please do not take the ‘live’ list as gospel. This time I’m going to avoid using my phone until I walk into the Beacon to reserve as much battery-power as I can. Pictures will be added once I’m home from the show. Have a happy and safe NYE everyone!
Next day update: pictures at the bottom of the post.
4:55pm – leaving to meet up w/ friends. Wish me luck on the MTA, I’m avoiding Times Square at all costs.

Phish played another amazing show last night in Miami. The third night of the four-night run will go down in the record books as Phish played their 242nd unique song this year, which breaks the previous record of 240 in 1998. The band is clearly feeling confident as they end a super strong 2009 tonight. I’m jealous for my friends that are there attending, but thanks to the streamers I’ve gotten to catch a lot of this action live, including the absolutely nasty “Back on the Train” that went down last night. Kudos, Phish. You’re officially back. Like, 1000% back.
Setlist: Phish @ AAA, Miami, FL 12/30/09
Set 1: Soul Shakedown Party, Runaway Jim, Jesus Just Left Chicago, Dixie Cannonball[1], Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan, Corrina, What’s the Use?, Tela, Gone[2], Rocky Top, Chalk Dust Torture, David Bowie
Set 2: Sand, The Curtain With, Lifeboy, Back on the Train[3] > Wading in the Velvet Sea, Hold Your Head Up > Love You[4] > Hold Your Head Up, Free, Boogie On Reggae Woman, Run Like an Antelope[5]
Encore: Frankenstein[6]
Notes: Gone was a debut, and Dixie Cannonball was a Phish debut. Back on the Train featured an extended jam including hints of Limb by Limb. During Love You, Fishman mentioned Trey’s announcement on December 28, 2009 that it was Fishman’s last vacuum solo “of the aughts,” so he announced that he needed “someone dressed like me” to do it, brought audience member Rich onstage to do the solo, then gave him the vac! Antelope included numerous Boogie On teases. Frankenstein featured Page on keytar. Corrina was played for the first time since February 24, 2003 (100 shows) and Tela was played for the first time since November 24, 1998 (235 shows). This gig featured ten songs not previously performed in 2009 inclusive of two debuts; 2009 features more unique songs (242) than any other year in Phish’s history, beating out 1998 by 2… so far!

Instead of looking back at 2009 on New Years Eve, I’m going to look forward to 2010. These are the album releases (whether the release date is set in stone or only rumored) that I’m looking forward to.

The purest year-end music list would be a playcount of the tunes you listened to most, and not the carefully sculpted, self-consciously eclectic 1-10s we end up reading. We know you’re as sick as we are of parsing critics’ picks, so here’s at least one countdown where you won’t find Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, or Dirty Projectors in the Top 10. That’s because the following fifty songs are ranked via the number of times someone clicked and downloaded them from our servers, and nothing else. It’s a list that finds Julian Plenti feeling pretty good about himself. Same goes for Rain Machine, Asobi Seksu, Handsome Furs, and our CMJ lineup. Of course, only you can tell us how many times you actually played the tunes after they left our nest.
