Music isn’t just beginning to influence teens. It has been an influence throughout several different times. Teenagers of America are a prime example of the effect music has on teens psychologically, physically and economically. Pop music is often used by companies as a marketing gimmick. Then there are those young teenagers trying to earn recognition by starting as a garage band. It is also used among teens simply for entertainment purposes. In whatever way it’s used, music is a powerful tool to impact teens of all times.
If we focus on the last three decades alone there is evidence in pop music’s heavy influence on teens. The popularity of pop music skyrocketed in the 1980’s. Compact discs were introduced and the rise of MTV helped pop stars like Michael Jackson rise to fame in a fast growing society. There were various styles of music that were born during the 80’s like: acid house, psychedelia, death metal, goth rock, folk and hip hop.
The music of the 1990’s started off strong for the music styles such as pop, rap, and even more one-hit wonders. Hip-hop and techno gradually rose up in popularity due to its image of being “dance music”. Different hip-hop/rap artists used different techniques in their music. For example, MC Hammer rapped about the rise of his career while Tone Loc sang with sexual lyrics and innuendo. Rock used its lyrics to satirize society and its values as in Nirvana’s “Smells like Teen Spirit” to make its way back into the radio airwaves. In rock’s return to mainstream music, it brought along with it the rise of grunge and alternative rock. Luckily grunge and early alternative’s dark style called for teens to search a more happier and lighter style of music. Musical figures such as Britney Spears and N’Sync dominated the late 90’s era, but in doing so they brought back the sexual lyrics and innuendos of the previous era.
As we’ve entered into the 2000’s music has taken on some new meaning. Old stars from previous decades like Mariah Carey and Madonna attempt to keep their career afloat by occasionally releasing singles. Justin Timberlake is one pop star who has successfully revived his career since. Thanks to bands such as Fall Out Boy and Simple Plan punk rock has risen in fame. The popular reality music show “American Idol” has sparked various different styles of music during this time. Like back in the 80s, American Idol has allowed young adults to become stars. Foreign acts also started to become popular in the eyes of the teenagers much like the foreign musical revolution in the 60’s. As of late 2000’s, pop music started to blend in with R&B as seen in the music of Nelly Furtado, Rihanna, and Pussycat Dolls.
With the advancements made in technology came MP3s. So many teens listen to music using their MP3 players nowadays and enjoy carrying their favorite tunes with them wherever they travel. YouTube is also a very popular site among teens. Now there is a program that takes the two to enhance the music listening experience. If you have a song on YouTube that you really like you can convert it into an MP3 and listen to it with your portable player. Convert My Tube makes it all possible. As we journey into another age of music enjoy the time we are in using Convert My Tube.

I’ve recently come across Bandcamp.com and I’m impressed with the service it provides for artists/bands (and for music fans for that matter.)
It lets bands sell their music as downloads so that the bands themselves keep all of the profit from those sales. Screw the record labels. It’s the artists that should be making money [...]

This week The Hype Machine is unveiling the top 50 artists & albums of 2009 (ten are revealed each weekday.)
The lists were compiled based on how often the artists and albums were mentioned on the music blogs on this list (no, MusicByDay.com isn’t on the list but we’re not nearly as focused on new music [...]

Our illustrious Mr. Whitperson was feeling a bit under the weather today, but he had some time to put together a rocking podcast to pay homage to the 10 year anniversary of Phish’s Big Cypress NYE2000 celebration down in Florida, easily one of the most important concerts of the decade. Love it.

I’ve mentioned here a few times before how much I like AmazonMP3 (I think it’s way better than ITunes) for purchasing music downloads. The selection is outstanding and I like that the mp3 quality is better than it is on ITunes and that you don’t have to use ITunes as your player (I prefer Winamp) [...]

Well I’m going to give it a shot again this evening. All the standard disclaimers apply – I’m going to get songs wrong (or more likely, not be able to identify them) particularly during the 2nd set. Please do not take the ‘live’ list as gospel. This time I’m going to avoid using my phone until I walk into the Beacon to reserve as much battery-power as I can. Pictures will be added once I’m home from the show. Have a happy and safe NYE everyone!
Next day update: pictures at the bottom of the post.
4:55pm – leaving to meet up w/ friends. Wish me luck on the MTA, I’m avoiding Times Square at all costs.

Phish played another amazing show last night in Miami. The third night of the four-night run will go down in the record books as Phish played their 242nd unique song this year, which breaks the previous record of 240 in 1998. The band is clearly feeling confident as they end a super strong 2009 tonight. I’m jealous for my friends that are there attending, but thanks to the streamers I’ve gotten to catch a lot of this action live, including the absolutely nasty “Back on the Train” that went down last night. Kudos, Phish. You’re officially back. Like, 1000% back.
Setlist: Phish @ AAA, Miami, FL 12/30/09
Set 1: Soul Shakedown Party, Runaway Jim, Jesus Just Left Chicago, Dixie Cannonball[1], Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan, Corrina, What’s the Use?, Tela, Gone[2], Rocky Top, Chalk Dust Torture, David Bowie
Set 2: Sand, The Curtain With, Lifeboy, Back on the Train[3] > Wading in the Velvet Sea, Hold Your Head Up > Love You[4] > Hold Your Head Up, Free, Boogie On Reggae Woman, Run Like an Antelope[5]
Encore: Frankenstein[6]
Notes: Gone was a debut, and Dixie Cannonball was a Phish debut. Back on the Train featured an extended jam including hints of Limb by Limb. During Love You, Fishman mentioned Trey’s announcement on December 28, 2009 that it was Fishman’s last vacuum solo “of the aughts,” so he announced that he needed “someone dressed like me” to do it, brought audience member Rich onstage to do the solo, then gave him the vac! Antelope included numerous Boogie On teases. Frankenstein featured Page on keytar. Corrina was played for the first time since February 24, 2003 (100 shows) and Tela was played for the first time since November 24, 1998 (235 shows). This gig featured ten songs not previously performed in 2009 inclusive of two debuts; 2009 features more unique songs (242) than any other year in Phish’s history, beating out 1998 by 2… so far!

Instead of looking back at 2009 on New Years Eve, I’m going to look forward to 2010. These are the album releases (whether the release date is set in stone or only rumored) that I’m looking forward to.

The purest year-end music list would be a playcount of the tunes you listened to most, and not the carefully sculpted, self-consciously eclectic 1-10s we end up reading. We know you’re as sick as we are of parsing critics’ picks, so here’s at least one countdown where you won’t find Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, or Dirty Projectors in the Top 10. That’s because the following fifty songs are ranked via the number of times someone clicked and downloaded them from our servers, and nothing else. It’s a list that finds Julian Plenti feeling pretty good about himself. Same goes for Rain Machine, Asobi Seksu, Handsome Furs, and our CMJ lineup. Of course, only you can tell us how many times you actually played the tunes after they left our nest.
