Is the Craft Of Song Writing A Thing Of The Past

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

I was just sitting in my office cooking up a SEO report for some clients when Justin Bieber came blasting out of the radio from an office opposite to mine. I quickly shut the door and pondered has the craft of song writing been moved to history.

Mull it over in any decade from years gone by. In the 50′s you had Elvis, Mate Holly, Johnny Cash, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Billie Holiday, Jody Reynolds, Bill Haley and His Comets, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tiny Richard, and Tom Jones, not forgetting Sinatra and all of the swing Jazz and blues legends (Ray Charles, Shirley Bassey, Dean Martin, BB King…), occasionally all releasing records at the same time.

In the 60′s you had most of these artist’s again – longevity wasn't a difficulty as is now – plus The Stones, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and getting away from the UK rock and roll bands, The Doors, Bob Dylan, Janice Joplin, The Beach Boys. The seventies saw The Bee Gee’s, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, James Brown, Joni Mitchell, David Bowie, Aretha Franklin, Ac/Dc, Kool & The Gang.

The 80′s saw the raw material of legends from Duran Duran, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Madonna, Gary Numan, Michael Jackson, Guns N ‘ Roses, Kiss, Def Leppard, Eurythmics. Then with the 90′s we had Nirvana, Radiohead, U2, Prince, The Genius, Bon Jovi, Primal Scream, Tu Pac, Soundgarden Pearl Jam.

With the noughties we were given Eminem, Coldplay, Foo Wrestlers, Red Hot Chiil Peppers, 50 Cent, Snow Patrol, Chemical Bros, Jay Z, Gorrillaz, Queens Of The Stone Age. But sadly the modern pop lore at the end of the 2000′s has favored throw away rubbish pop. I'm not talking about bubblegum pop like the Beach Boys, as their songs have stood the test of time.

But rubbish vocodered beating pop songs all about being in “the club” getting it on with somebody you have just met. “What’s my name” a chanting. Who cares. Good music should talk for itself and not brand the singers name. Positively abominable. Today’s music is about fame for fame’s sake and nothing else. It's a corporate commodity.

Mamma Mia at Prince of Wales Theatre London

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Mamma Mia had been a 1975 hit song belonging to the pop group ABBA. Winners of The Eurovision Song Contest, the group was comprised of Benny Andersson, Bjrn Ulvaeus, Anni-Frid Lyngstad (Frida), Agnetha Fltskog.

Mamma Mia! is a stage musical from the book written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of ABBA. Timeless songs such as Dancing Queen, I Have a Dream and Take a Chance on Me, are woven into a tale of love, laughter and friendship. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the Greek island paradise they last visited twenty years ago.

Mamma Mia, by way of the story-telling magic of the tunes of ABBA, we meet Donna, a forty-something single mum, who recollects faraway memories of carefree days and careless nights whilst her daughter Sophie desires of tradition, enchantment and a big white wedding ceremony.

Mamma Mia transports audiences to a tiny mythical Greek island as we share two unforgettable days in the lives of our heroines surrounded by crystal blue seas and beneath a beating Grecian sun.

The first theatre on this site was The Prince’s Theatre, designed by C J Phipps and opening in January 1884. It was later demolished in 1937 to make way for the larger present theatre. On 17th June, 1937 the foundation stone of the current theatre was laid by Gracie Fields, and the theatre, now named The Prince of Wales, was opened on 27th October, 1937.

Modifications were made to the stage region in 1963 and the theatre was reopened on 28th March, 1964. The enormous Stalls Bar is located below the stalls seating area and features a dance floor at first designed for tea dances. Productions here have included The World of Susie Wong in 1959, Funny Girl in 1966 with Barbra Streisand, Sweet Charity in 1967 and Guys and Dolls in 1985.During The month of january 1989 the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Aspects of Love opened right here and run for 1,325 performances and becoming the Prince of Wales Theatre lengthiest operating production. The Effect Pop Music Has On Teens

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

Music isn’t just beginning to influence teens. It has been an influence throughout several different times. Teenagers of America are a prime example of the effect music has on teens psychologically, physically and economically. Pop music is often used by companies as a marketing gimmick. Then there are those young teenagers trying to earn recognition by starting as a garage band. It is also used among teens simply for entertainment purposes. In whatever way it’s used, music is a powerful tool to impact teens of all times.

If we focus on the last three decades alone there is evidence in pop music’s heavy influence on teens. The popularity of pop music skyrocketed in the 1980′s. Compact discs were introduced and the rise of MTV helped pop stars like Michael Jackson rise to fame in a fast growing society. There were various styles of music that were born during the 80′s like: acid house, psychedelia, death metal, goth rock, folk and hip hop.

The music of the 1990′s started off strong for the music styles such as pop, rap, and even more one-hit wonders. Hip-hop and techno gradually rose up in popularity due to its image of being “dance music”. Different hip-hop/rap artists used different techniques in their music. For example, MC Hammer rapped about the rise of his career while Tone Loc sang with sexual lyrics and innuendo. Rock used its lyrics to satirize society and its values as in Nirvana’s “Smells like Teen Spirit” to make its way back into the radio airwaves. In rock’s return to mainstream music, it brought along with it the rise of grunge and alternative rock. Luckily grunge and early alternative’s dark style called for teens to search a more happier and lighter style of music. Musical figures such as Britney Spears and N’Sync dominated the late 90′s era, but in doing so they brought back the sexual lyrics and innuendos of the previous era.

As we’ve entered into the 2000′s music has taken on some new meaning. Old stars from previous decades like Mariah Carey and Madonna attempt to keep their career afloat by occasionally releasing singles. Justin Timberlake is one pop star who has successfully revived his career since. Thanks to bands such as Fall Out Boy and Simple Plan punk rock has risen in fame. The popular reality music show “American Idol” has sparked various different styles of music during this time. Like back in the 80s, American Idol has allowed young adults to become stars. Foreign acts also started to become popular in the eyes of the teenagers much like the foreign musical revolution in the 60′s. As of late 2000′s, pop music started to blend in with R&B as seen in the music of Nelly Furtado, Rihanna, and Pussycat Dolls.

With the advancements made in technology came MP3s. So many teens listen to music using their MP3 players nowadays and enjoy carrying their favorite tunes with them wherever they travel. YouTube is also a very popular site among teens. Now there is a program that takes the two to enhance the music listening experience. If you have a song on YouTube that you really like you can convert it into an MP3 and listen to it with your portable player. Convert My Tube makes it all possible.
