Boy Bands In Music

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

The Choirboys: The original line-up of the group was made of Patrick Aspbury (born 9 January 1993) of Chelmsford, Eskircke Francis Benedict “Ben” Inman (born 19 March 1993) from Yorkshire and Charles John “CJ” Porter-Thaw (born 11 December 1994) from Sheffield. Both Aspbury and Porter-Thaw were members of Ely Cathedral choir and Inman was a member of the Southwell Minster choir. In the Summer of 2005, they were selected from cathedral choristers around the UK for a recording contract with Universal Classics and Jazz, and released their self-titled first album in November of that same year. After an intensive promotional tour of TV and radio stations, they performed at several events, including the Southwell Minster St. Cecilia Concert, the Ely Cathedral May Day Concert and charity concerts in major London venues such as the Royal Albert Hall. Over time the boy’s voices chaged and they had to be replaced in order to keep the right sound. The first trio have since moved on and retired from being trebles at their respective cathedrals.

Boyz II Men: Boyz II Men is an American Contemporary Rhythm and Blues vocal group best known for emotional ballads and complex, intricate a capella harmonies. Based on record sales, Boyz II Men is the most successful R and B male vocal group of all time, having sold more than sixty million albums worldwide. In the 1990’s, Boyz II Men found fame on Motown Records as a quartet, but currently the group is a trio signed to Decca Records, with members Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris (no relation), and Shawn Stockman. The group won four Grammy Awards in the 1990’s, and the trio was nominated for two Grammies in 2009.

D-Side: An Irish boyband. Established in 2001, by twins doctor and dentist Rory and Eoghan Mac Sweeney they were signed to Edel records. Edel brought in top UK manager Kim Glover to manage the band after her success with New Kids on the Block, Ant and Dec, (as PJ and Duncan), B*Witched and Let Loose. Glover secured their entry into Japan getting them a signed with Avex and worked with them until the end of 2004. They had some success in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Europe, winning Best New Band Award at the Smash Hits Tour in 2002. The band was originally made up of five members, Ryan O’Rian, Shane Creevey, Derek Moran, Damien Bowe and Dane guiden, but became a threesome, however, when Damien and Dane both left for personal reasons.

ATL: The four members of ATL – vocalists Tre, Will, L-Rock, and rapper Danger, came together after being chosen though an Atlanta-area talent search. Where previous R and B groups (112, Jagged Edge) had crossed over into hip-hop, by either featuring a guest rapper, or appearing on someone else’s album, ATL were a self-contained R and B/hip-hop/fusion band. The quartet enlisted R. Kelly to produce their dbut single, “Calling All Girls,” which was released in 2003.

2Be3: 2Be3 was formed in 1996 and comprised three childhood friends from Longjumeau (a suburb of Paris): Filip Nikolic, Adel Kachermi and Frank Delay. Inspired by English bands like Take That and Worlds Apart, the group produced 3 studio albums and various compilations before disbanding in 2001. The name 2Be3 was a pun on the English language phrases to be free (in French, “tre libre”) and to be three (“tre trois”). Hence the band’s name was pronounced in English (“Two Be Three”) rather than French (“Deux Be Trois”)

183 Club: 183 Club is a Taiwanese boyband managed by Jungiery. In other words, 183 Club is part of J-Star. Originally they were called “183 Yu Le Bu,” meaning “183 Entertainment Group,” but it was later decided that the name should be shortened to what it is now: 183 Club. The average height of the original five members combined together is roughly 183cm, hence the group name 183 Club. However, it is true that only one member is actually 183cm tall: Johnny Yan, the former leader of 183 Club.

Records, whose debut album, Coming Home, was released on 26 October 2009. The trio consists of Lance Corporal Ryan Idzi, Sergeant Richie Maddocks and Sergeant Major Gary Chilton. The Soldiers’ first national interview was with The Sun, with a free download of the lead song from the album Coming Home. The concept was devised by Jeff Chegwin and Nick Patrick.

Take 5: Take 5 was one of the many groups whose formulation and promotion were due to the machinations of promoter Lou Pearlman, and all of the members had had prior experience in the entertainment industries. Member TJ Christofore had won Star Search in 1995 and had appeared on Broadway in Les Misrables. Stevie Schulthorpe was previously a model, commercial actor, and theater performer; brothers Ryan and Clay Goodell were both trained pianists and also had experience in commercials and theater. Tilky Jones had played drums in a ska punk group called User Friendly and Ryan Christopher who replaced Stevie Schulthorpe later on.

Hi-Five: An American R and B quintet based out of Waco, Texas who had a #1 hit on Billboard’s Hot 100 in the early 1990’s with “I Like the Way (The Kissing Game)”. Hi-Five was formed in 1990, and consisted of the late Tony Thompson, Roderick “Pooh” Clark, Marcus Sanders, Russell Neal, and Toriano Easley. Easley was later replaced by Treston Irby.

Natural: The original band was formed in 1999 when future members Marc Terenzi and Ben Bledsoe met at a party. Terenzi and Bledsoe met future band mates Patrick King and Michael Johnson at an industry party. The four got together and after subsequent members joined and left (at one point they had 6 or 7 members total), settled on fifth member Michael Horn who Bledsoe had found through his vocal coach.

N Sync: Formed in Orlando, Florida in 1995 and launched in Germany by BMG Ariola Munich, ‘N Sync consisted of Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick and became the third highest selling boyband of all-time (behind the Backstreet Boys and the New Kids On The Block). After heavily publicized legal battles with their former manager Lou Pearlman and former record label Sony BMG, the group’s second album No Strings Attached sold over one million copies in one day and 2.4 million copies in one week, giving it the highest first week album sales ever. In addition to a host of Grammy nominations, ‘N Sync has performed at the Academy Awards, the World Series, the Super Bowl and the Olympics, and sang or recorded with the likes of Elton John, Mandy Moore, Aerosmith, Mary J Blige, Britney Spears, Nelly, Michael Jackson, The Jackson Five, Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, and Gloria Estefan. The group also appeared as themselves on The Simpsons, in an episode entitled “New Kids on the Blecch”, which aired on February 25, 2001. The band are among the highest selling musical acts of the 2000s, and have emerged as one of the most acclaimed boy bands.

Triple 8: Triple 8, aka 888, were a British five-piece hip-hop style boy band signed to Polydor Records. Triple 8 were promoted as the British ‘N Sync and a rival to manufactured boy bands of the time, such as Westlife and A1.They had two hit singles: “Knockout” and “Give Me A Reason”, which charted at numbers eight and nine respectively. Their album, Heavy W8 was cancelled and the band subsequently parted company with their record label. The album has since leaked on the internet.
