This is my first try at live-blogging from the Beacon, and my first try with this phone. If things don’t go perfectly, please accept my apologies in advance.
During the course of the evening I will do my best to update the setlist (including the VIP Soundcheck at 5:00PM). The blogging client I’m using on my phone seems to crash every time I try to include a picture, so I’m not hopeful that I’ll be able to include any during the show. When I get home (I live close to the venue) I’ll be sure to update this post to include some photos.
4:57pm – waiting in lobby while they do the real soundcheck…
5:14 – VIP Soundcheck Setlist
Warren has specifically said “bad karma will fall on anyone who leaks what we play now on the Internet”. And I don’t need any bad karma, so I’m respecting his wishes.
6:00pm stage dark
6:30pm @ Starbucks keeping warm, waiting for friends to arrive. The VIP soundcheck was interesting – it seemed to be an actual soundcheck, not a “mini-set” of pre-determened songs, which is what a lot of folks thought it would be.
8:07pm in the Beacon again, security decided to push the border of inappropriate on the way in

I haven’t heard every album released in 2009 (not by a long shot) so I think it’d be a bit presumptuous to claim these seven albums to be the best albums of the year, instead these are just seven albums released in 2009 that I’ve enjoyed and that I think you may enjoy as well. [...]

Why all the nudity in 2009? Well, look at this way: The affordability of video production technology has made it easier for everybody to get in the game; the unceremonious death of music television has shifted the means of music video distribution to the internet, where it’s less about FCC than about NSFW; and let’s face it, blogger hit counts love no four letters more than NSFW. More than ever, video directors and bands are cutting through the iMovie inundation by setting their songs to a bunch of extras parading their giggly bits. (Occasionally the artists themselves are baring more than just their souls, too.) To memorialize the year in NSFW, here are ten of the most prurient sets of moving pixels we’ve seen all year. Any other week we’d say you shouldn’t watch this at your cubicle, but you deserve a reward for even being at work this week, so go nuts! Lots of nuts here.

A top 150 albums of 2009 list has been voted on (and then compiled) at what I believe is the biggest Radiohead fan forum on the internet.
As a big Radiohead fan (and a member of that forum, although I didn’t take part in this vote as I’m not much of a regular because the [...]

For those of us who will be watching the Phish New Year’s Eve run in Miami from the sidelines, tonight is the night it all begins down there…
The Miami Herald offers a nice preview with an interview with Trey via phone:
The Miami shows culminate in Phish’s first New Year’s Eve concert since 2003, which was also at the AAA. The band, which reunited earlier this year after a four-year hiatus, performed at Big Cypress to ring in 2000, so South Florida obviously holds a special attraction for the veteran Vermont musicians.

It was a tumultuous year for late night laffs, with Jimmy Fallon joining the fray, Conan taking over Tonight only to find awful Leno sink the NBC ship at 10PM, and Letterman enjoying career-high ratings despite (or because of?) a sex scandal. It was, however, a solid year for late night music booking. We regularly saw bands leap from our backyards and comments section to network television, and indexed highlights for you the mornings after. Here’s a look back at a dozen memorable late night TV jams in reverse chronological order. It kicks off with last week’s surprise in which a Stroke and some ex-SNLers revisited a yuletide classic.

As first reported by @KristinHersh, the paralyzed Athens singer/songwriter overdosed on pills and was pronounced dead on Christmas day. Constellation has collected words from admirers like Jeff Mangum and Michael Stipe, along with info on public memorials and donating in his honor.
