Spoon Transference Out In January

Good news: new Spoon album! The band’s typically terrific LP, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, came out two years ago, which is a long time to wait for typically terrific LPs. Britt stopped the gap with the Got Nuffin EP and live debuts of new material with dramatic titles like “Is Love Forever?,” “Writing To You In Reverse,” and “Who Backs Your Money.” If you were into those turns, you’ll likely be into Transference: As P4K reports, the forthcoming Spoon album features those aforementioned tracks (some with revised titles) alongside seven more we haven’t even heard yet. Between this and Yeasayer, today’s been a strong downpayment on Q1 2010.

Transference is due 1/26 in North America via Merge and 1/25 in Europe via Anti-. If you’ve been asleep the last 13 years or so, there’s free MP3 from each of Telephono, A Series Of Sneaks, Girls Can Tell, and Kill The Moonlight at spoontheband.com to help you understand why new Spoon album news is good news. After that, have fun imagining the sounds associated with the Transference‘s tracklist:

Phish Friday: Download Live From the Archives No. 14

Friday, October 30th, 2009

I have to post this one, not just because of the obvious reason (that it’s more great live Phish), but because it comes to us courtesy of Dan, the owner of Eppie’s restaurant in downtown Charlottesville, where I actually used to live just a few months ago. Check it out:

“Dan, the proprietor of Eppie’s on the Downtown Mall, is a huge Phish fan. If you are in the great city of Charlottesville, VA, swing by, say hello, and thank him for supporting the drop.io pages of the entire Phish Fest8 run.”

Download: Phish “Live From the Archives” #14

Also, just in case you missed it, we posted a link to download the band’s Festival 8 soundcheck, which very quickly made its way around the Internets last night.

Thanks to TMWSIY for the link above.

New Tigercity Video – “Fake Gold” (Stereogum Premiere)

New Tigercity Video -

When we posted “Fake Gold” from the Brooklyn Bee Gees/Hall & Oates-inflected lite-rock quartet Tigercity, I said it felt like the song was “about trying to stay fab in this shitty economy.” Judging from the jets, jewelry, champagne, and ladies in this Michael Simses-directed video, the guys aren’t having a problem maintaining the sheen — especially bearded vocalist/keyboardist Bill Gillim — even if it is faux. The song comes from the group’s first full-length Ancient Lover, which comes out next week. And, speaking of shiny things, they head on tour with Neon Indian soon. For now, though, let’s see where conspicuous consumption gets you.

Adam Lambert Will Not Survive 2012

Friday, October 30th, 2009

This music video is hilarious because A) it has Lambert singing his awful song while walking through an Apocalyptic nightmarescape. How romantic?! SING TO ME WHILE WE RUN IN TERROR, ADAM LAMBERT! And B) it suggests that he will survive 2012. Uh, no, he won’t.

New High Places Video – “I Was Born”

New High Places Video -

“I Was Born” feels like an especially personal statement from High Places. Mary Pearson loves the bassoon, her primary instrument: She spoke about taking classes and teaching lessons when we did a Quit Your Day Job in early ’08, but this is the first High Places song to feature the instrument. Rob Barber adds a little straight-up guitar, which reminds you he grew up listening to hardcore, punk, and other guitar-based music. Speaking of growing up, the first-person lyrics involve Pearson remembering the day she was born, thinking about being born again, channeling that moment, etc. That, and they self-directed, shot, and edited the beautifully eerie video of themselves alone and washed out in the desert. Adding to the solitary feel, the “I Was Born” single’s out today without a second track, via Thrill Jockey.

Why many teens are currently preferred that Rhythms & Blues (R&B) is their most favorite music genre than Pop?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Since the 3RD Quarter of year 2005 up to present, R&B is very popular in such countries including my homeland, the Philippines. But, I’m now doubting because many teens & preteens not only here in the Philippines are preferred that R&B is their most favorite music genre than Pops & Disco which I like most of all. What is the Difference of R&B and Pops & Disco which I like most of all?

New Yeasayer – “Ambling Alp”

Friday, October 30th, 2009

New Yeasayer -

The chanted, harmonious Brooklyn-via-Baltimore psychedelic-pop troupe told Jessica in a Progress Report that they were, essentially, trying to “make you feel inadequate, like you’re not cool enough to be listening to [this] music.” Tough to say where their tongues and cheeks are with that bit, but after hearing “Ambling Alp” you could say that recipe has netted something quite the opposite: The track chirps and fuzzes in uplifting polyrhythm, segues into left-field electronica blips, flips into harmonies and horn arrangements, but is as inviting and sunny a piece of weirdo-pop as they’ve produced yet.

Jay-Z & Alicia Keys Played The World Series

Jay-Z & Alicia Keys Played The World Series

With “Empire State Of Mind” Jay-Z’s cast himself as the Jeter generation’s Billy Joel. His NYC’s all about pills (“MDMA got you feeling like a champion, the city never sleeps, better slip you an Ambien”) and his song might pack a cringey Alicia Keys hook, unless “bright lights will inspire you” will inspire you, but having Jigga open Game 2 of the World Series with this Blueprint 3 track seemed to go over well with the fans (and judging by some faces, even the Phils). There’s some interesting crowd noise when he gets to “I made the Yankees hat more famous than a Yankee can,” but you might have to give him that. Jay-Z rapped it live (check the echoes), Alicia sang it to a backing track (check the not-echoes), and the Yankees won by scoring three points — one for each Blueprint! I am a very big fan of sporting matches!
