I was at a Chinese restaurant today reading the Chinese Zodiac placemat to pass the time while waiting for my extra spicy Szechuan chicken to arrive at my table when I decided to check the Zodiac signs for The Beatles (yes as you can tell by the ridiculous amount of posts I’ve been making about [...]
I bought a Martin DX1 Acoustic Guitar after reading a lot about what a great deal they are (a Martin guitar without the Martin price) and reading a lot of really positive customer reviews (in fact out of the dozens of reviews I found for the guitar I don’t think I read a single negative [...]
Citing sources at the Sonic Unyon pressing plant, Exclaim.ca is reporting that a “Apart By Horses”/”The Hollow Earth” 12″ comes out 9/22 on TBD Records. It is said to be limited to 8,300 copies worldwide and have “really awesome packaging and artwork.” OK. The timing does coincide with the release of Twilight 2: The Legend Of Curly’s Gold, so draw your own conclusions. In more official news, the Radiohead frontman’s “All For The Best,” that Mark Mulcahy cover we premiered last month, sees a 7″ release 9/7 via Mezzotint. It’s backed with Mulcahy’s original and limited to just 2,000 copies. Finally, you’ll wanna keep an eye out for The Age Of Stupid, a global warming docudrama playing in 444 (should we be paying attention to these numbers?) theaters nationwide on 9/21 followed by a live broadcast of a NY panel discussion with Kofi Annan and Gillian Anderson. There Thom Yorke will perform an acoustic version of the Stupid title track (via PASTE). Back to the 12″ rumor — those of you who think “Apart By Horses” sounds familiar are correct. Here’s a performance of it from 2005:

You know how Julian released that Phrazes For The Young trailer teaser thing and everybody thought “whoa Strokes guy is going epic Ratatatty synth pop” with his solo thing? Maybe everybody should stop thinking that. Or at least put those expectations on pause. In his own words, Casablancas said he intended “to capture the catchiness of modern music” but also “[get] at the power and seriousness of classical music or older music,” and that sounds about right in listening to these tunes Julian performed with a full band this past weekend in Tokyo. First up, Casablancas croons over a shifting, halftime and lilting keyboard pop backdrop. Yes, it has a classical fugue-style bridge. (And yes, that is the Phrazes For The Young album art.)

HEALTH’s cacophonous open-field noise-pop has always lent itself to re-interpretation — which is why the quartet wisely released an entire remix album, Disco, on the heels of their debut. As we’ve mentioned, and as you’ve heard via “Die Slowly” and “We Are Water,” the Los Angeles group’s Get Color makes for exhilarating, relentless listening in its original form. Montreal’s CFCF, who shifted HEALTH’s “Triceratops” way back when, take away the percussive pluck of Get Color’s darkly droning “Before Tigers,” transforming the song into a more meditative Washed Out experience. You get the sense it could be re-touched endlessly.
Phish released a soundcheck jam from the August 14th show in Hartford, CT earlier this month and it’s actually pretty interesting. The show notes say “Trey Anastasio on bass and Jon Fishman on drums” which is what makes it more interesting for me obviously. Right now they’re offering it up as a free download, so head over to LivePhish.com to get a version for yourself.
